What does anti-bias training have to do with audio engineering?

What does anti-bias training have to do with audio engineering?

One time, a film maker called me up because she wanted to use a hubub of voices as a music statement but it wasn't coming off. I listened to the audio and knew just the thing! A resonant 70s style low pass filter would keep the timbres but jettison the words. I ran her vocal recording through my synthesiser and proudly returned with the improved audio.

She listened. "This does sound a lot better," she said, "but you've completely prioritised the men's voices and removed the women."

Cis normativity aside, she was right. My process had made altos much softer and pretty much nuked sopranos. I had to go back and organise each audio sample by vocal range and run the filter multiple times. It was time consuming, but the result was much nicer.

She noticed this because she knew what it was to be silenced according to vocal range - something that has gradually faded from my mind as its no longer a regular occurrence for me. If I'd been working with a fellow tenor or a bass, we might never have noticed. The audio would have been worse and the while project subtly effected by unconscious bias.

Instead, when the film was released, a reviewer praised the sound in that section.

Unconscious bias isn't just unfair, it makes *your* work worse.

New Scientist: UK visa scheme for prize-winning scientists receives no applications newscientist.com/article/22984

There are over 70 awards that qualify academics for the fast-track Global Talent visa scheme, launched in May. New Scientist's FOI request revealed literally no one applied. Scientists approached for the article were like "this is a joke, literally who would want to come here"

A few from today.

4 days ago, there was no snow up there to speak of.
Change of conditions and we are getting a reasonable dusting up top.

Even lower hills were white capped on the way in. Expect this to still be very changeable going forwards for a while, but we may get a decent dump if the wind holds for a few days.

We adore the sensory crunch of fresh snow underfoot.
It's fabulous.
We will hike and climb a fair old distance to go hunting for it when it starts to appear 😆

OK.

Having had to reverse the truck down a track with full cloud cover, far from any other light source, we have decided the reversing bulb is crap.

Just ordered a pair of LED flood lights, a long harness and a nice rocker switch.

The dark will be banished 🤣

(Though there will be plenty of fabrication to get everything nice and integrated, we are sure)

Tdor

I'm glad that twitter is doing a tdor thing with all the glaad tweets about people who died, bit every single name listed is American.

Trans people tend to have international solidarity normally.

We need to be careful of letting cis-lead organisations speak for us.

Which of course is a stress contributor, and therefore increases the likelihood.
But what can you do... :blobcat_googly:

We suffer from migraines.
Specifically, we get visuals, less the headache most people associate with migraine.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scintill

Indeed for years, we never new to describe these as related to migraine 🤷‍♀️

Twice in the last two weeks grrr...
It's totally stress related, so absolutely nothing we can do. There's no way of exerting any control over those external stressors at the moment, so guess we just have to wait until it all goes away 🤷‍♀️

Frustrating though.
We can do with impaired eyesight for many things, hell we climbed on ice through an episode.

However, it does make us nervous about driving commitments, which we are locked into, as that during an episode is not something you can just fall onto other senses for.

Luckily, the two things have not clashed, but it's a worry. 😬

Wahoo!!!! :ablobcathappypaws:

DVLA finally got there...

Our licence turned up in our *actual* name/title. With a photo that reflects us, but still looks awful enough for the jokes 🤣
It **even** has all of our entitlements for different vehicles, which they have been known to lose in the past.

Took forever, but :blobcheerbounce:

Cartoon re PEM/energy exertion in healthy vs ME/CFS people

A great cartoon that demonstrates the difference between energy and exertion in a healthy person and someone with Myalgic Encephalomyelitis…

Last night our wife put some apples on to stew.

We saw, came through and said to her, we turned them down now they are simmering, but you'll need to check them in a bit.

They never got checked.
A thick layer of burnt on apple covered the pan 😮

We are used to her forgetting and stuff like this happens. It's life.

Usual solution of simmering it with a dishwasher tablet in it barely touched it this time.

Scraped off the biggest bits with a metal scraper, but wire wool after that was really not a match for it.

Hey ho.

Pillar drill, steel brush and a bit of vinegar, and bingo :blobcheerbounce:

She was ready to through the pan out 🤷‍♀️ Just needs a wash up now, and ready for next time 😆

Using the fact that our wife wore our jeans, and they have been washed, but are wet.

That's a situation where we can justify lighting a fire at this time of day, so we can put the airer beside it 😆

Decadent, totally.

(But we did cut and split the wood, so our decision to burn it 😉)

Well.

It's absolutely awful timing in many ways. Our load is large and extremely unpredictable at the moment with our eldest in hospital in Dundee, and we have no idea when or *how* that will change.

However.

There is a job being advertised by an autistic-led support organisation, which is requiring someone whose experience overlaps with ours, is autistic, and openly neurodiverse and LGBTQ+ positive.

That ticks a *lot* of boxes for us.

We have the capability, question is if we have the capacity at the moment.

Seriously considering it at the moment, going to mull for a couple of days to get consensus.
